Lauren Lucas
Interview by Chris Koppers/image courtesy of Lauren Lucas

I noticed Lauren and her exceptional talent on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NXffMexkKA

My short 5-question-interview should provide you all the essential information about her remarkable music.

What are you working on right now?

At the moment, I am concentrating on writing for other artists and touring to support my latest project, On With the Show. I am a staff writer for a publishing company called Eleven Eleven Music Group, so I feel really lucky to have a day job where I get to write songs.

Your voice is pretty remarkable. I would say block-busting. How would you define your music? What are the key elements?

Thank you! My music has evolved over the years from having a country/soul edge to a more pop sound. I was influenced early on by Bonnie Raitt, Patty Loveless, Vince Gill, Keb Mo, and The Judds. As I've gotten older, I really enjoy listening to other styles of music and have been influenced by bands and artists like Ben Folds Five, John Mayer, Jonatha Brooke, and Sara Bareilles. My voice has a natural low timbre, which I think gives it a distinct sound, and my default button is usually a bluesy, soulful, country sound. But I've had fun over the years experimenting with how to use that sound with different instrumentation and melodies, and not always hitting that same default button.

Please pick one.

Being on stage...
a) is my favorite.
b) is cool, because I can be close with my fans.
c) is my destiny.

a) Is my favorite.

Where will you see yourself in 2013?

I hope to have a few cuts under my belt as a songwriter and a hit on the horizon for a blockbuster act! I'd also like to think about recording a new project for myself in 2013... not really sure what it will be like. I've been writing a ton and I'd like to see what songs rise to the top and then probably choose a music direction. I'm really allowing my songwriting to dictate the musicality of what I'm doing right now.

What is your favorite song among your own composed ones?

Well, it's a running joke in the songwriting community that our favorite song is the one we just finished. As a songwriter, it is hard to choose just one because we tend to hold different songs close to our hearts for different reasons. Among my favorites, I'm really proud of writing "Follow the Leader" with my long time cowriter and friend, Chuck Jones. That song was the inspiration for my latest record and it means a lot to me.
